Warning Signs of Drug Use

Here are some of the warning signals that should cause you concern. But even if you suspect drug use, don't overreact. Be reasonable. Don't automatically jump to negative conclusions. And listen carefully to what your child has to say. Some things may legitimately have other acceptable explanataions.


  • Decrease in personal hygiene and dress standards,; drastic change in hairstyle
  • Tobacco smell or tar stained fingers
  • Eyes red, dilated, or contracted; frequent use of eye drops
  • Sudden, constant runny nose
  • Eating extremes; unexplained weight loss
  • Chronic cough
  • Chest pains
  • Dulled speech and expression
  • Problems sleeping or eating a lot
  • Menstual irregularity
  • Poor health
  • Intoxicated behavior
  • Uncontrolled eye movements
  • Unusual paleness
  • Wearing sunglasses much more than normal
  • Frequently sick in the morning; OK by noon
  • Abnormally slow or halted physical development
  • Constant lethargy


  • Sudden discipline problems
  • Always wanting to be alone
  • Coming home later and later
  • Borrowing money more frequently
  • Stealing
  • Whispering on the phone
  • Avoidance of eye contact
  • Avoidance of the family
  • Lying
  • Breaking rules
  • Swearing at you
  • Destroying or damaging property out of anger
  • Constant argumentative behavior
  • Overreacting


  • Caring less about everything; little enthusiasm or motivation
  • Negative change in attitude; argumentative or sarcastic
  • Moody, anxious, hostile, irritable
  • Loneliness, depression, extreme sensitivity
  • Needing instant gratification


  • Skipping school, declining grades
  • Sudden disciplinary problems
  • Problems with concentration, attention span, memory
  • Change in friends to "less desirables"
  • Drug-orientated graffiti or decals on notebooks or book covers
  • Frequently late for school
  • Falling asleep in class
  • Always making excuses
  • No interest in school activities
  • Trying to pit parents against teachers


  • Sudden change of friends
  • Not bringing friends home anymore
  • Strange looking friends
  • Increasing self-centeredness
  • Radical change in beliefs, values and ideas


  • Possession of drugs
  • Loss of interest in favorite activities for no obvious reason
  • Distorted sense of time
  • Decrease in memory, attention span, and/or judgement
  • Paranoia
  • Room decorated with drug oriented graffiti, decals, posters, etc...
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Using incense, breath fresheners, room deodorizers to cover smell of pot.
