WHAT TO DO WHEN INVOLVED IN A COLLISION

The Highway Traffic Act requires that all collisions where persons are injured, where damage exceeds a combined value of $1,000 or where there is damage to highway property, MUST be reported to the police.

Motor vehicle collisions are very scary for any motorist, no matter how severe the collision may be. If you are involved in a motor vehicle collision, it is important to try to stay calm and take the following steps:

Check the Exception List to determine if police are required at the scene:

Exception List

  1. Injury or death;
  2. Criminal activity (example - impaired driving)
  3. Federal, provincial or municipal vehicles;
  4. Vehicles transporting dangerous goods;
  5. Damage to private, municipal or highway property.

STEP 2:

If it is safe to do so, remove the vehicle from the roadway.

 STEP 3: 

If damage is below $1000.00 in combined damage and not listed on the exception list, you may exchange information with the other involved parties, including independent witnesses. Obtain names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance and vehicle particulars, including license plate number.
